Family Mediation in Singapore

The Past, Present, and Future

SMP was pleased to have Mr. Rajan Chettiar, a very experienced family law practitioner speak on and share his insights as to how mediation has been utilised as a tool for resolving family disputes in Singapore to-date and also how mediation as a process continues to evolve as we head into the future. There was clearly interest in the topic as we saw a healthy turnout at the session. There were attendees joining the Zoom session from countries such as Brunei and Japan.

As part of his talk/ presentation, Mr. Chettiar spoke passionately about mindful lawyering in the context of litigating family disputes and the important role that mediation plays in this connection. Something that stood out was how Mr. Chettiar described family mediation as being a beautiful ‘dance’ between a Judge mediator, Parties’ counsel as well as the Parties.

Upon the conclusion of his presentation, the attendees engaged in a lively Q&A where questions that Mr. Chettiar fielded touched on amongst other things, the efficacy of mediations conducted remotely including ways in which remote mediations could be better handled, the interplay between counselling and family mediation as well as tips and approaches to deal with an unwilling client or participant to a mediation. The event was overall very well received and SMP looks forward to continuing bringing you value-laden and quality content in the months to come.
